Spiritual Healing (Annual project)

After school program

  • Homework Help Club

  • The Homework Help Club is going on since 2002. Its objective is to provide tutorials for the students to improve their grades by helping them complete their homework and do their research projects in the center.

    The program’s service is for students ranging from grades 1 to 12. Usually, parents bring their children to the Society’s center, where they are assisted by skillful volunteers. The Homework Club service is a volunteer based one, and it is run by Somali and non-Somali volunteers. It runs every school year from Monday to Thursday (6:00-9:00 pm).

    Purpose:
    To promote awareness and understanding of different issues within the context of the Somali culture and religion.

    Activities:

    • Spiritual healing workshops
    • Parenting & Conflict resolution
    • Families getting together

    Capacity Building Workshops

    Purpose:
    The purpose of this project was to develop the skills and the capacity of the Somali community.

    Activities:

    • Project management Skills
    • Fundraising skills
    • Community advocacy and building public relations
    • Accountability

    Emerging Health and Social Issues Faced to our Community

    Purpose:
    The main purpose of this project was to promote awareness and understanding of emerging health and social issues faced by our community.

    Activities:

    • Awareness of obesity
    • Understanding of attention deficit/ hyperactive disorder
    • Time and money management

    Youth information dissemination and assessment

    Purpose:
    To meet the social and emotional needs of the Somali youth

    Activities:

    • Crime and youth workshops
    • Education, employment and career planning workshop

    Crime prevention

    To prevent crime and victimization effectively, the community identifies its assets and needs. It also mobiliz-
    -es a variety of players, including those providing services in areas such as housing, social services, public health, policing, community sports and recreation, schools, and other socio-cultural organizations such as those serving women, children, or youth.

    With the help of the Justice Canada - community mobilization program, the community partnered with the Kurdish Friendship association and the Mennonite centre for new comers to successfully complete the first phase of the crime prevention project involved parents and children.

    Purpose:
    The overall goal of this project is to prevent and reduce crime among the Somali community in Edmonton through literacy. This Project is a family and community-based program incorporating literacy learning, holistic family learning, and developing better parenting skills and family communication to enable the parents to develop better skills and opportunities for their children. The program will focus on families with children 0 to 12 years old in the Somali community

    Activities:

    • Parenting education that focuses the prevention of crime in the early years of the children

    • Connecting to the outside/main-stream world and literacy activities so adults can attain a level of proficiency in basic skills in areas of their lives to access the resources of better parenting and dealing with educational and justice systems in Canada

    • Literacy, pre-literacy and developmentally appropriate activities for children

    • Formal and informal activities providing opportunities for adult-child interactions
