SCCSE had made that wonderful opportunity available for the community; the community members took advantage of the outstanding opportunity by listening to lectures and having their children participate in hilarious activities and entertainments.
Highly educated individuals of Somali descent spoke to the community about different issues and perspectives. The educated lecturers came both from outside and within Canada to share the happiness of the Somali Canadian National Week, and to educate and inspire the community about various matters that are important to the community’s wellbeing and progress.
The week’s opening ceremony held at the Islamic Academy was attended by a multitude of people from different background and professions. Similarly, representatives from mainstream organizations, immigrant serving agencies and Edmonton public schools attended the wonderful ceremony night of the Somali Canadian National Week. Dr. Yusuf Ahmed Nur, a professor at the College at Brockport of the State University of New York, was the ceremony night’s Keynote Guest Speaker. He urged the community to educate its youngsters in order to become a successful community which can benefit both Canada and their kith and kin back in Somalia. Hassan Ali, SCCSE’s President, thanked all organizations and agencies that lend helping hands to Somali-Canadian community in Edmonton. He pointed out that without the contribution and continuous support offered by the organizations, the community wouldn’t gain access to significant services and programs that it is benefiting from. The opening ceremony night started at 6:30pm and ended at 9:30pm. The community rejoiced together and learned a lot from the night’s speeches and activities.
