Parents Night for Edmonton Somali-Canadian Community

Somali-Canadian Cultural Society of Edmonton (SCCSE) held an informative session for Edmonton Somali-Canadian community’s parents on Sunday March 27, 2011. The purpose of the session was to urge the parents to team up with schools to educate children so that they can graduate with good marks. In addition, the parents were reminded of the importance of the Homework Help Program that the organization has been running for many years for free in order to help the community’s students succeed academically. The parents were also asked to volunteer as volunteering is a noble cause which gives back to the community and country.

The parents listened to a detailed lecture delivered by Dr. Abdullahi Omar, who pointed out that the parents should take an active role, or else their children cannot succeed on their own. The topic of his speech entitled “The Challenges of Our Youth: A call for understanding”, touched on several issues, including multifaceted challenges that surround the community’s youth. The presentation was followed by questions and comments. The parents asked numerous questions and commented on different issues. It was an engaging night for the community’s members.
